Golfito

Golfito, adjacent to the Golfito Bay, is located in the beautiful Golfo Dulce (Sweet Bay) and is the former banana port previously owned by what is known today as the Chiquita Banana Company. Much of the tourism in Golfito focuses on the sport fishing industry. However, the Piedras Blancas National Park is located just outside of Golfito and protects over 34,000 acres of rainforest and wildlife. Golfito offers small marinas, yachting and boating services, sport fishing and is a destination for cruise ships. For many boaters, the tranquil waters in the southernmost tip of Costa Rica is usually the last stop in this beautiful country before heading to Panama and beyond. Golfito is about a 5 hour drive from San Jose or you can take the 45-minute commuter flight on Sansa or Nature Air.

Explore and Enjoy

In addition to fishing you can explore the Botanical gardens, travel thru the mangroves, go kayaking, or watch for dolphins and whales all right here in the Golfo Dulce. If you need help deciding, contact Golfo Dulce Outfitters for transportation or recommendations.

Nightlife

Banana Bay Marina, Fish Hook Marina, Latitude 8 and Casa Roland all have happy hours ranging from 5 to 8 pm daily. On some later evenings you can enjoy live music and/or dancing at Casa Roland, Black Marlin, Golfo Dulce Bar or Bar Villas Marina (in Las Trenzas) so check their event schedules.

Where to Stay

Mar y Luna Hotel & Suites has great rooms available right on Golfito Bay, Golfito Vacation Rentals has full apartments for rent and Casa Roland Hotel offer luxurious rooms with access to their swimming pools, tennis courts and saunas. Rooms are also available at Sierra Hotel and Hotel Somoa del Sur. If you're the more adventurous type and looking for a unique experience, stay 45 minutes outside of Golfito at Finca Bellavista which is a sustainable treehouse community.

What to Taste

Try Buenos Dias or one of the many local Sodas and bakeries for breakfast. Mar y Luna has great whole fish dinners while Banana Bay has good burgers and fajitas. You can also bring your catch to any of the local marinas and they'll cook it up for you!

What to Do

You can fish with some of the best captains in Costa Rica, one being Bobby McGuinness. Or shop at the Duty-Free Zone (known as El Deposito), swim at Casa Roland's large pools for the day, hang with the locals and take a water taxi over to one of the many "beach bars" on Playa Puntarenitas or just watch futbol at Mar y Luna. Latitude 8 Bar also has the US football ticket so you'll find a group of fans there during the US football season.
